France 2030's national battery strategy is part of the broader framework of France's reindustrialisation, an economic priority of the government since 2017. The main objective is to transform key sectors of the French economy, such as healthcare, energy, automotive, aeronautics and space, by making them greener and more competitive through technological innovation. The strategy also aims to position France as a world leader in these areas, by supporting the industrialisation of innovation from fundamental research through to the production of new products or services.
Main measures and projects:
Development of Gigafactories:
France is speeding up the development of its gigafactories, in particular with projects such as ACC, Envision, Verkor and Prologium, which should create around 10,000 direct jobs in the Hauts-de-France region by 2030.
Support for research and innovation:
More than €54 billion will be invested to help businesses, universities and research bodies make a success of the transition in these strategic sectors. Projects such as SENSIGA, OPENSTORM and BATMAN are being funded to improve battery diagnostics, develop experimental characterisation techniques and integrate artificial intelligence into battery development.
Training and recruitment:
Specific projects are being funded to meet the industry's recruitment and training needs. For example, the "Ecole de la batterie" project in Grenoble, which focuses on engineering and design office profiles, and other projects in the Hauts-de-France region.
Innovative battery projects:
Calls for projects such as "Innovative Solutions and Technologies for Batteries" have funded projects such as DEFIBATT and DIGIBATT, which respectively aim to design coated current collectors for future generations of batteries and digitise a battery production plant to optimise every stage of the battery life cycle.
France's National Battery Strategy 2030 is a crucial element of the country's economic and environmental policy. By supporting research, innovation, training and industrial development, France is striving to become more independent, prosperous and environmentally friendly. This ambitious strategy aims to transform the French economy into a world leader in battery technologies, which are essential for the transition to more sustainable mobility and energy.
